To become a licensed HVAC Technician in the District of Columbia, individuals must obtain a license through the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) Board of Industrial Trades. Journeyman licenses can be obtained either by completing a nationally-certified apprenticeship program or by demonstrating three years of experience and passing the DC Journeyman Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Examination. To become a Master Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, five years of experience as a licensed mechanic and passing the Master Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Exam are required. The District of Columbia offers reciprocity for licenses obtained by examination in Maryland or Virginia, provided they are current and in good standing. Licenses expire every two years on September 30th of even-numbered years, and no continuing education is required for Journeyman or Master licenses.
