In Wisconsin, there is no statewide HVAC technician license. However, individuals can obtain an HVAC Qualifier Certification through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) to satisfy local licensing requirements. To qualify, individuals need 4 years of experience (1,000 hours per year) in HVAC work, 4 years of HVAC-related education, or a combination of both. Applicants must pass the HVAC Qualifier Exam and pay an application fee of $15 and an exam fee of $25. Additionally, HVAC contracting businesses must register as an HVAC Contractor, and anyone handling refrigerants needs an EPA Section 608 certification. Wisconsin does not have reciprocity agreements for HVAC contractors.
