route How to become a plumber in Alabama
To become a certified Plumber in Alabama, individuals must first register as an apprentice with the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board. After gaining two years of experience as an apprentice, one can apply to take the Journeyman Plumber examination. Upon passing the exam and working as a Journeyman for one year, individuals can then apply for the Master Plumber examination. Effective January 1, 2026, Master Plumber applicants will also need to pass a business law exam. While Alabama generally does not have reciprocity agreements with other states, a new agreement with the Mississippi Board of Contractors is effective January 1, 2026, and out-of-state licensees may be eligible to test for an equivalent Alabama classification.

| Notes | Minimum age for apprentice is 18. Journeyman Plumber requires two years of experience as an apprentice. Master Plumber requires one year of experience as a Journeyman. Effective January 1, 2026, Master Plumber applicants must also pass a business law exam. All applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. Journeyman and Master Plumber certifications expire on December 31st annually, with renewals beginning October 1st. Continuing education must be completed by November 1st. Licensees over 65 are exempt from CE requirements. If you own your own business, Master Plumbers must maintain a minimum of $300,000 in property damage liability insurance and $100,000 in general liability insurance, and a $2,000 surety bond is required for plumbing and gas fitting contractors. Workers' compensation insurance is mandated for businesses with five or more employees. |
