To become a licensed Insurance Agent in Rhode Island, individuals must be at least 18 years old and pass the Rhode Island Insurance Producer Licensing Exam. While pre-licensing education is not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to prepare for the exam. After passing the exam, applicants must undergo a criminal background check and submit an application with the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation - Insurance Division within one year of passing the exam. Rhode Island offers reciprocity with all other states for insurance producers, allowing licensed individuals from other states to obtain a Rhode Island license without re-examination, provided their home state license is in good standing and they apply for equivalent lines of authority.
