To become a Licensed Respiratory Therapist in West Virginia, individuals must obtain a state license from the West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care. Applicants need to complete a CoARC-accredited respiratory care educational program and pass the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Therapist Multiple-Choice (TMC) Examination. As of July 1, 2022, new applicants must hold a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential. A state and federal criminal background check will be required for new applicants effective June 12, 2026. West Virginia also participates in the Respiratory Care Interstate Compact, allowing for reciprocity with other compact states.
